| York Redoubt - East Pine Island Pond |
We walk down to East Pine Island Pond from York Redoubt. As we get near to the lake, we look back towards the Purcell's Cove Road to admire the patchwork of colours on the hillside. We walk along the eastern shore of East Pine Island Pond. The sun is shining brightly from a clear blue sky, and the colours appear correspondingly vivid as we look across to the western side of the lake, and to its northern end. We pass the southern end of East Pine Island Pond on our way to our next destination, which is the southern end of West Pine Island Pond. |
| West Pine Island Pond - Ridge between East and West Pine Island Ponds |
At the southern end of West Pine Island Pond we look across to the western shore, admiring the deciduous trees that grow there. Next we go up on to the ridge between East and West Pine Island Ponds. There we have another view of West Pine Island Pond. We also have an excellent view of East Pine Island Pond and the Atlantic Ocean. The view of the lake and the ocean changes as we proceed along the ridge. The ridge itself is very beautiful. The trees on the ridge are still largely green, and this greatly affects the impression created by those that are not. Descending from the ridge, we reach the northeast corner of West Pine Island Pond, where we can admire at close quarters the superb and varied colours of the deciduous trees lining the shore. |
| Ridge between West Pine Island Pond and Flat Lake - Purcell's Cove |
Next we go on to the ridge that lies between West Pine Island Pond and Flat Lake. On that ridge we find a beautiful tarn. As we approach it we have a view along the length of it. After a few footsteps we have a view across the tarn to the mixture of bog and granite on the other side. The path continues through a cleft between two large boulders. After glancing back through the cleft between the boulders, we continue along the ridge towards Duck Pond. Once we have left the ridge behind us we have to traverse boggy ground to reach Purcell's Cove. On the way we pass a strikingly beautiful patch of cotton grass. |
