Mid Autumn, October 18 & 25, 1997: Two Walks
With javascript and a fast internet connection the tall and also the wide pictures can be viewed automatically

October 18
Spryfield -
Granite Plateau -
McIntosh Run -
West Pine Island Pond
Starting in Spryfield, we cross the McIntosh Run and climb on to the granite plateau. The colours are spectacular, even though the sky is clouded. The patterns of colour vary. A boggy patch has different vegetation from the rest of the plateau. Sometimes the scarlet-leaved bushes predominate, but on other parts of the plateau the tone is set by birches, jack pines or other vegetation. Next we descend to the McIntosh Run and walk along its banks to West Pine Island Pond, where we see this beautiful fern, and admire the fall colours on the granite shore which is reflected in the water. We also encounter a beautiful combination of lichen, wintergreen leaves and blueberry plants growing on the shore of the lake.

October 25
Williams Lake -
Ridge south of Williams Lake -
Jollimore
Starting at the east end of Williams Lake, we look across to the southern shore. We skirt a bog and pass a stand of birches flanked by Indian pear bushes as we head for the ridge on the south side of the lake. We reach a part of the ridge which offers a view towards the granite plateau. Descending from the ridge, we proceed to Jollimore. On the shore of the Northwest Arm we have a view across to the Halifax Peninsula and McNab's Island. In another part of Jollimore, near the old graveyard, we find an outstandingly beautiful bog.
